Where did the name come from?
Like many Millennial parents, when my husband and I found out we were expecting a baby boy, we decided to keep his name private until he was born. We didn't even tell our own parents.
He was getting his name from my husband's friend and coworker who tragically died in a farming accident, Jason Coulter. I never personally met this man, but only heard good things about his character as a hardworking, family man. Those personality traits were really important to me, and Jason was really important to my husband, Kyle. With a slight switch in spelling, we decided on Colter Kyle.
Turns out, it's really hard to keep that secret. In an effort not to 'slip up' with the name, we referred to our son as Copilot. We thought we would call him copilot as a nickname when he was born, but it didn't stick. However, it is still a special nickname to us.
Colter Kyle was born June 13th, 2021.
My husband and I have talked about starting a business since we were dating. Finally, one day I decided I couldn't let my fear of failure stop me from trying something I really wanted to do. Plus, the selection of boy clothing in box stores is unfairly limited. While sharks and dinosaurs are great, I was seeking more neutral choices and less cartoons while building my son's closet.
And that is how Copilot Clothing Company is born.
